Institute Program Overview

The Institute for Public Health and Faith Collaborations May Be Highly Productive for You and Your Community, IF You:

  • Think at community scale and hope for transformation  (and are willing to experience transformation in your own life);
  • Are troubled by failures of community systems to engage disparities in health (and are willing to open your eyes wide to the reasons);
  • Are already engaged in collaborative work engaging faith and health  (and want to do more, better with concrete results);
  • And are willing to engage in the responsibilities and commitments listed in the Institute application.

Institute Goals

The Institute for Public Health and Faith Collaborations, a program of the Interfaith Health Program (IHP) at Emory University, fosters the capacity of public health systems and communities to improve the complex and enduring behavioral and social conditions under girding health disparities. The purpose of the Institute is to create a unique learning model and environment for leaders in faith and health organizations to develop collaborative skills for aligning and leveraging their respective strengths. Scholarship support for some of the teams accepted into this fourth national Institute is generously being provided by Wheat Ridge Ministries and Methodist Healthcare Health and Welfare Division.

The Institute focuses tightly on leadership skills necessary for collaborating at community scale and specifically on collaborations between government, private and religious networks. The design of the experience has been developed through an extensive participatory process involving a number of national leadership experts and community practitioners. The Institute reflects a deep commitment to values and goals articulated in the Case for Faith and Health found on the Interfaith Health Program's website. For more information on the Institute, including a downloadable concept paper  (a more richly developed Case for Faith and Health) and a list of  Institute Design Team members, go to http://www.ihpnet.org/iphfc.htm.

Costs

Each team is expected to pay the entire tuition or a portion of the tuition costs supplemented by scholarship support. Scholarship support is available for teams that meet specified criteria. The full tuition for a team is $10,000. This covers the following:

  • A four-day comprehensive team-based, transformative leadership development learning experience (dynamic curriculum, faculty, learning materials, support from mentors)
  • Lodging (food and four overnight accommodations).
  • Pre and post-Institute learning materials and experiences linking teams to learning, support, and inspiration from a national network of 71 other faith and health teams

Scholarships are available to cover 75% of tuition costs for select Wheat Ridge Ministries and Methodist Healthcare applicants that satisfy each organization’s criteria. More information on the cost and scholarships can be found at www.ihpnet.org/national5application.htm or by contacting one of the persons listed below.
