Purpose

The Center for Urban Education Ministries connects leaders of Lutheran congregations, schools and agencies with resources to help them provide effective educational opportunities for children, youth and families who live in urban environments.

The Center for Urban Education Ministries is a means through which Wheat Ridge Ministries pursues its mission of seeding new ministries of health and hope, in the name of the healing Christ. The Center for Urban Education Ministries seeds the development of new urban education ministries as an important way to nurture the health of body, mind, and spirit in youth and adults living in urban areas.

The Center for Urban Education Ministries serves congregations and agencies in urban settings and the leaders of these ministries, including pastors, Lutheran school educators, directors of Christian education and lay leaders. The ultimate beneficiaries of the efforts of the Center for Urban Education Ministries are individuals and families in urban settings who are touched with the healing love of Jesus Christ through the efforts of Lutheran congregations and agencies.

The Need

  • Urban church leaders face unique challenges.
  • Urban Lutheran schools face more challenges than ever and need support from the entire church for their very survival.
  • God commands in Jeremiah 29:7 "Seek the welfare of the city to which I have sent you, pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare."

Desired Outcomes

  • A growing number of individuals and families in urban neighborhoods experience health and hope through the ministries of local Lutheran congregations and agencies.
  • Lutheran schools in highly urban settings are effective centers of Christian education, partnering with parents to meet the educational needs of the students in their care.
  • Church leaders in urban Lutheran congregations and agencies are well equipped for the challenges of their ministry.
  • Church leaders in urban Lutheran congregations and agencies experience support and mutual care from peers and colleagues in other urban ministry settings.

Current Activities
